The name

A small blue butterfly, and a signature

Glaucopsyche is a genus of blue butterflies. One of them is Glaucopsyche alexis, the green-underside blue. The name comes from two Greek words, and both of them fit.

The mark is my signature. The initials JS in cursive: the J makes the left wings and runs down through the body, and the S makes the right.

About

Working close to home

I photograph the natural environment of Central Texas: birds moving through the Hill Country season by season, insects working the wildflowers, and lizards on the limestone.

Most of it comes from going back to the same few places until I know what the light does there, and then waiting.

There are two other sets here. One is public safety and aviation: engines, ambulances, aircraft, stations lit up at night, and the people working them. Public safety is part of my day job, which is how I got close enough to take these. I no longer work for the services pictured.

The other is the built world: monuments, storefronts, rusted iron, and neon after closing. Some of these were taken on trips.
