The name

A small blue butterfly, and a signature

Glaucopsyche is a genus of blue butterflies — among them Glaucopsyche alexis, the green-underside blue. The genus name is built from two Greek words, and both of them turned out to be the right ones.

The mark is my own signature: the initials JS in cursive, the J drawn out into the left wings with its descender running down through the body, the S opening into the right.

About

Working close to home

I photograph wildlife and landscape in Central Texas — the Hill Country escarpment, the rivers cut down through limestone, and the birds that move through them season by season.

Most of this work comes from returning to the same handful of places often enough to know what the light does there, and waiting.
